Prune with Purpose

Winter is an ideal time to prune deciduous trees and shrubs while they’re dormant. Trim back dead or weak branches to encourage healthy spring growth and improve airflow. Avoid heavy pruning of subtropical plants, which may still be sensitive to cooler nights. Always use clean, sharp tools—and consider a local arborist for larger jobs.

Mulch to Protect & Nourish

A thick layer of organic mulch helps regulate soil temperature, retain moisture, and suppress weeds through the dry winter period. Aim for 5–7 cm around garden beds, but keep mulch away from stems and trunks. Sugarcane, bark chips, and composted leaves all make excellent options for Brisbane’s subtropical conditions.

Plant Winter Veggies

Take advantage of Brisbane’s mild winters to plant cool-season crops like broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, lettuce, and peas. These vegetables thrive in full sun and benefit from well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Consider adding compost or aged manure before planting to boost soil health and productivity.

Check Soil Health

Cooler months are a great time to improve your soil. If your garden feels compacted or water is pooling, it may be time to aerate and enrich with compost or a soil conditioner. Testing pH levels can also help you identify what your plants need before spring hits. Healthy soil is the foundation of a thriving garden year-round.
